Americans have been reading that the national debt is about to ruin them for as long as there has been a national debt. The warnings arrive in every decade and at every level of the ratio: Congress was told the nation faced destruction at 1.9% of GDP, and the same sentences are being written today at 100%.

We read the same number from the other side of the ledger. The national debt is the private sector’s net financial assets: the accounting record of every dollar the government has spent and not taxed back, now held as savings by someone else. A government that issues its own currency is not financially constrained in issuing more of it; it cannot run out of the unit it creates. The limits that bind are real ones: productive capacity and inflation.

What follows is a chronological gallery of those warnings as they were actually printed and broadcast: verbatim, with the outlet, the date, and the federal debt-to-GDP ratio in the year the words ran. Every quotation links to its primary source, and each sits on the debt curve itself, so the level being described is visible alongside the language describing it.
